Following her wedding to Prince Bortimer von Slothjem at the 3rd Annual Oktoberfest in Bozageest, Seraphina seemed to be on a course for a quiet unassuming life in her new home at Boar’s Head Castle. Anyone making that assumption clearly did not have a grasp of the sort of madcap couple Seraphina and Bortimer were. Of all of the adventurers that had made Renatus the proud nation it was to become it was only fitting that these two rogues should have continued to have grand adventures for as long as they were able.
The strength that Seraphina gave to Renatus was her networks of spies, operatives, secret police forces, and of course the trained assassins and certain monstrous individuals that she and Bortimer encountered and befriended as the realm expanded. Using her own closely knit band of followers as a foundation Seraphina had a brilliant and responsive means to track everyday happenings that might fall into the category of “odd and suspicious activities.” These were then relayed to either the proper authorities in the area in which they were noticed, or to a shadowy group of ne’er-do-wells that operated under the banner of “The Fellowship of Fiends.” In such circumstances a potential threat to the Archduchy of Renatus would find themselves arrested to face charges or alternatively vanish without a trace never to be heard from again. A lot of it depended on the threat level. And as cheerful and delightful a person as Seraphina was, she could also be a ruthless and bloodthirsty opponent.
Helpful to her goals was her husband, Bortimer. He imported some of his closest cutthroat allies from his native Slothjemia, and as new allies were encountered in the realms that merged with Renatus the ranks of dedicated rogues and scoundrels grew and grew. Not only was this a lucrative criminal enterprise, but it also made for a diabolically effective secret police force. Whenever Seraphina and Bortimer would travel to foreign countries they were sure to have shenanigans and heists going on the side and in the shadows. But when they traveled in Renatus they never traveled alone, constantly under the watchful eye of their most capable and fearsome henchmen.
There were a number of attempts by enemies of Renatus to foil its seemingly unstoppable expansion. Some of these plots involved trying to assassinate the Archduke or to undermine the people’s confidence in his rulership. At every turn these schemes were rooted out and thwarted by Seraphina and her shadow army of sinister sneak-abouts. More than one foreign provocateur was themselves hunted down by her assassins to drive home the point that Renatus was not a power to be trifled with. Her closeness with a number of powerful individuals in Partum allowed Seraphina a degree of freedom to operate that no other rogue could boast, and she took full advantage of it. She and her husband had homes and bases from which to operate not only in Renatus but also Slothjemia, Fanolania, Lusatia and Geldenreich. For being a halfling Seraphina had a mighty long reach.
Only when it came to the Fourth Imperium did Seraphina meet her match. The evil and corrupt Imperium employed many of her same tactics, but their concern for life and justice was far less noteworthy. While it is often true that one must fight fire with fire, it becomes more treacherous when the initial blaze is a raging inferno that threatens to engulf the whole continent in its ferocity.
