A Most Remarkable Tiny Lizard

It was less than ten years ago when a kobold named Jandle first made his way to the region that was then known as “The Little States” seeking out a warrior to whom he could serve in the tradition of Slothjemian Squires. Word had spread about the deeds of a ranger named Xan and his stalwart band of ne’er-do-wells and from the tales of their exploits it seemed to Jandle that this fellow would be an excellent fit. This proved to be accurate in a number of ways. Jandle would accompany his lord on a variety of adventures covering everything from hunting brigands in the countryside to exploring the underdark far beneath the surface of the world to travelling to foreign lands on diplomatic missions to heads of state. Jandle was quickly becoming an indispensable part of what made the Archduchy of Renatus function from day to day.

As a way to keep his lands in order and everything running smoothly Archduke Xan appointed Jandle to be the Prime Minister of Renatus. This made the humble kobold the most powerful man in the realm second only to the Archduke himself. Now the tables have turned and emissaries from other nations were making the trek to Renatus to meet with Jandle in the capitol of Renatus. Less than three feet tall and weighing less than 35 pounds, Jandle had ascended further than his wildest dreams could have imagined.

It was true that the Prime Minister of Renatus served at the pleasure of the Archduke, and like all appointed positions in the realm Jandle could have been replaced at any time for any reason. To suggest that this weighed upon the little kobold as any measure of anxiety or nervousness would have been soundly rejected by everyone in Renatus. With Jandle running the day-to-day business of the land it enabled the other nobles more leeway to pursue their own interests and not be bogged down in the mundane administration of their estates. Along the way Jandle managed to add to his already considerable personal wealth. In addition to having an outsized amount of influence politically and commercially, Jandle could now afford to live a lifestyle far grander than many nobles. He married an urd named Icheress, a cunning little female that was an integral part of Duchess Thorngage’s inner circle of rogues and sneak-abouts. Their first clutch of two eggs resulted in a kobold son and an urd daughter. Every two years or so Jandle and Icheress would have another clutch of eggs, and over the next twenty years they amassed a total of thirty-two children, and roughly a third of them ended up having wings like their mother. There was never a financial burden in accommodating this many offspring thanks to Jandle’s wealth, but it did create a need to expand his burrow home and to establish new homes for the young ones as they got older and wanted to establish their own families with the kobolds that had settled in Renatus after Archduke Xan began consolidating the realms around him under his control and giving these otherwise reviled creatures a safe place to live.

Such was the lot of Jandle. He came a long way from serving the disgraced Baron of Vorkelvale so many years ago. With a lifespan upwards of 130 years or more Jandle would have a long time to govern Renatus, keeping a steady course for the realm even as the Archduke and his heirs grew old and passed on their responsibilities to the next generation in line. A most remarkable tiny lizard.
